Volunteering represents one of Acreditar’s greatest driving forces. We rely on the support of a close-knit group of volunteers across all four Acreditar regions. We highlight the different locations and types of volunteering that we bring together:
Carried out in reference hospitals for pediatric oncology – IPO Lisbon, Coimbra Pediatric Hospital, IPO Porto, São João Hospital, and Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal. Here, volunteers work to humanize and bring life to the Pediatric/Oncology Departments, providing emotional support to hospitalized children and young people, and naturally, to their families. They are empathetic, smiling faces who arrive without hurry, ready for a carefree game or a heartfelt conversation.
Through partnerships with Associação Lux Vitae and the Portuguese Reiki Association, we have volunteers at the Pediatric Department of IPO Lisbon and São João Hospital who provide Reiki sessions to children and young people in treatment, their families, and the hospital staff, whenever requested.
At the Acreditar Houses in Lisbon, Coimbra, and Porto, volunteers act as companions and facilitators, supporting and engaging the families living in the Houses. They are indispensable helping hands for playtime and for temporarily stepping in for parents, allowing them some time for rest or personal organization.
There are also volunteers for specific areas, especially for moments of care for parents: hairdressing, manicure, pedicure, foot reflexology, Reiki, massages, and yoga. This type of volunteering promotes self-care, boosts self-esteem, and helps relax those who need it most.
Volunteering at the Acreditar Houses is a breath of fresh air: it’s laughter, play, conversation, sharing, and witnessing.
Made up of parents and young people who have already overcome the illness and now volunteer to welcome and support families in hospitals—those who have just received a diagnosis and need to see and hear stories of hope.
A team made up of educators, teachers, and other professionals in the field of education and development, available to provide academic support at home or online, alongside other initiatives aimed at promoting the learning of these children and young people.
Administrative, outreach, and logistical tasks – ranging from organizing and managing donated materials, coordinating events, recreational activities, and awareness campaigns, to participating in fundraising initiatives.
