Cancer in children and young people is relatively rare. In Portugal, around 400 children and young people are diagnosed each year. The types of pediatric cancer can be quite different from those that affect adults. They look different under the microscope and respond differently to treatment. The good news is that the cure rate is around 80%.
Children and young people up to the age of 18 are mainly treated in Portugal’s three national reference centres for pediatric oncology: Lisbon – IPO Lisbon; Coimbra – Coimbra Pediatric Hospital; and Porto – IPO Porto and São João Hospital.
